Encouragement

This is an encouragement that i got from another raw foodist:

You are entering on a wonderful journey - so please take the time to educate yourself about what you are doing. It really is a wonderful new life, but doing it properly takes time to learn, and give yourself time to let go of old habits and food addictions. Finally, be compassionate with yourself. If you find yourself feeling weak or a little flu-like, you may be detoxing, which is normal. You can slow down until you adapt more or take the time to learn more about cleansing to actually speed up the process.

Raw Foodist

Good evening..
First I'm going to post the Raw Foods F.A.Q. (Frequently Asked Questions)...
then tomorrow i'll update my take on trying to become a Raw Foodist.. :)

A Raw Food diet is based on eating whole, live, nutritionally-dense organic uncooked and un-processed foods as a large percentage of your diet. When 75-100% of your total food consumption is raw food, you are a raw foodist. At that rate it is believed that your body's own elimination system can eliminate all or most of the toxins in the cooked portion of your diet. When you eat more cooked food you are eating toxins faster than your body canget rid of them so they back up causing disease. Heating food above 118 degrees F. is believed to destroy valuable enzymes in food that can assist in digestion and health.

So here goes...

What are Living and Raw Foods?

Raw and Living Foods are foods that contain enzymes. In general, the act of heating food over 118 degrees F destroys enzymes in food. (Enzymes start to degrade in as little as 106 degrees F). All cooked food is devoid of enzymes, furthermore cooking food changes the molecular structure of the food and renders it toxic. Living and raw foods also have enormously higher nutrient values than the foods that have been cooked.

What are Enzymes?

Enzymes assist in the digestion of foods. They are known to be the "Life-Force" and or "energy" of food.

From the dictionary:

Noun: Any of the various complex organic substances, as pepsin originating from living cells and capable of producing certain chemical changes in organic substances by catalytic action, as in digestion.

Why are Enzymes Important?

Enzymes are important because they assist in the digestion and absorption of food. If you eat food that is enzyme-less, your body will not get maximum utilization of the food. This causes toxicity in the body. (Can you guess why over 75% of Americans are overweight?)

Doesn't the acidic ph of the stomach destoy enzymes?

Viktorus Kulvinskas, one of the world's foremost and most experienced active researchers into enzyme nutrition has information showing then stomach acid merely deactivates food enzymes. The enzymes are then reactivated in the more alkaline small intestine. Many people who eat all raw foods, sense a world of healthful difference in our energy, digestion and connectedness with nature by eating enzyme-rich living foods. When we stopped eating cooked protein foods which require large secretions of stomach acid (which is not healthful for several reasons) our stomach doesn't produce much stomach acid. Many people who eat raw foods eat a low protein diet and are free from the stomach acid secretions and have much more energy and a lighter disposition.

Is there a difference between living foods and raw foods?

Living and Raw foods both contain enzymes. In living foods, the enzyme content is much higher. Raw, unsprouted nuts contain enzymes in a "dormant"state. To activate the enzymes contained in almonds, for example, soak them
in water for as just 24 hours. Once the almonds begin to sprout, the enzymes become "active" and are then considered living.
Why eat only Organic Foods?

When juicing or eating foods, it is very important to choose to consume only organically grown produce. "Conventional" or "industrial" produce are grown with pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, and other chemicals that are toxic and/or harmful to your body. Organic foods are grown without the use of these harmful substances, taste better, and are more nutritious.

Do I need to eat all organic to be raw?

No, you do not NEED to eat all organic to be raw. I personally reccomend eating as much organic food as possible. It has been shown that organic produce contains less pesticide and other toxic residues. In addition, it has been shown that organic food may taste better and contain more nutrition. I believe its better to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables in most any case.

Will rinsing wash off the pesticide from industrially grown produce?

Rinsing with cool water will remove some surface pesticide residue, but not the pesticide that was absorbed into the produce as it was grown. Some of the most severely tainted types of produce are strawberries and bell peppers. Some of the least tainted: carrots and avocados.

Is this a "new" fad diet or something?

Not at all! Consider the following: during the vast majority of our existence on this planet, what choices did we have for food? What COULD we have eaten before we discovered fire, tools and implements to kill animals? The original diet for us MUST have consisted primarily of vegetables, fruits, and nuts! What other choices did we have? Clearly, a raw, plant based diet is the main food staple throughout the vast majority of the history of Humankind! Before Humans started killing and eating dead animal carcass, we ate fruits, leaves, nuts, berries, etc...

Is this just another vegetarian or vegan diet?

Yes and NO! This is the ULTIMATE vegetarian/vegan diet. It should be the goal of all vegetarians and vegans eaters to eat raw. The benefits are out of this world! Once you embrace an all-raw and living food diet, you are more living, have more energy, better health, think more clearly, and become more in tune with your body! This type of diet even gives you a "competitive edge" over people that eat life-less food.

What is the difference between a raw/living foods diet and a vegetarian one?

Vegetarians and vegans believe in only eating a plant based diet.

Living and Raw Foodists believe in eating only an UNCOOKED, UNHEATED, UNPROCESSED and ORGANIC plant based diet.

What is a Living Foodist or Raw Foodist?

A person who eats 75% or more living/raw food.. The more, the better. Optimally one should eat as 100% raw and living foods if it feels right for them.

Is a 100% living and raw food diet best?

That depends on the person. I believe life should not be about 100% raw food, but about 100% health. You can be "unhealthy" and eat 100% raw food, if you are not eating the correct raw foods. In addition, the stress that can be caused by "screwing up" or "falling off the wagon" can be worse than eating a high percentage raw food diet, with "better" cooked alternatives. I personally eat 80% raw foods.

Is there just one type of living/raw foodist?

There are many subcategories of living/raw foodists. Some include:

Fruitarian - People who consume mostly fruits.

Sproutarian - People who consume mostly sprouts.

Juicearian - People who consume mostly fresh juice.

Why would someone want to eat a raw and living foods diet?

There are many reasons why people eat a raw and living foods diet.

Health: Persons embracing this type of diet invariably experience improvements in their general physical and mental status, including more energy, better health, more energy , weight loss, detoxification, and a sturdier immune system that better resists and recovers from just about any kind of disease... and the list goes on...

Energy efficiency: Since you no longer have to cook, you don't waste electricity, and save the environment.

Since you eat organic agriculture, you help to save the planet. Most become more in-tune with their body; many report definite spiritual improvements.

No animal products are used, so the animals appreciate it.

What do raw/living foodists eat?

Raw and Living Foodist eat all fruits, vegetables, sprouts, nuts, seeds, grains, sea vegetables, and other organic/natural foods that have not been processed. In some instances, there are special ways to prepare the foods (example: most raw and living foodists soak/sprout nuts, seeds and grains before consuming them).
How can you tell if something is a raw/living food?

Most foods that have not been processed in any way, shape or form are raw and living foods (until cooked). Processed foods (canned, bottled or prepackaged) are most often adulterated, (changed from their original state) by heating, additives, preservatives, colorings, salt, and sugar. Don't think this is all for your benefit; the benefactor is the manufacturer's profit margin, NOT YOU. Try to purchase foods that are in their natural state.

What do raw and living foodists drink?

Water (purified water - never tap water), Freshly made juices (made with your own juicer - and consumed immediately), coconut milk (from a young coconut), are some of the liquids living and raw foodists drink. Most all drinks purchased at the store have been processed (Including: soda, bottled juices, coffee, alcohol, and most others) and are not included in a living / raw foodist diet.

Do raw and living foodists drink tea?

Some living and raw foodists will drink SUN TEA, which is tea brewed by the power of the Sun. Teas that contain boiling water are not considered raw. Many teas that are purchased in the store may have been processed at temperatures above 118 degrees. The best way is to grow your own herbs and dry them at a low temperature, and use them for sun teas.

Are certain raw foods better than others?

Yes. I believe one should focus on eating the majority of fresh fruits and vegetables. All other raw foods (such as nuts, seeds, etc) should be minimized. Fresher foods are always best. Ones that you grow yourself, or purchased at a farmers market, are much fresher than foods purchased in the grocery or health food store.

Where do raw and living foodist get their protein?

The WHO (World Health Organization) says humans need about 5% of their daily calories to come from protein to be healthy. The USDA puts this figure at 6.5%. On average, fruits have about 5% of their calories from protein. Vegetables have from 20-50% of their calories from protein. Sprouted seeds, beans, and grains contain from 10-25% of their calories from protein. So if you are eating any variety of living plant foods, you are getting more than adequate protein. Numerous scientific studies have shown the daily need for protein to be about 25-35 grams per day. So if you ate 2,000 calories per day, and ate raw plant foods that had an average of 10% of their calories from protein, you would get 200 calories worth of protein, or 50 grams. This is more than adequate to support optimal well-being. Other studies have shown that heat treating a protein (such as with cooking) makes about half of it unusable to the human body. So raw plant food protein is even a better source than cooked plant foods or animal foods. There is still a huge, foolish, misguided idea that plant protein is not "complete". This is based on studies done on rats in the 1940's. This false conclusion was drawn before we discovered the bodies protein recycling mechanism and its ability to "complete" any amino acid mix from our bodies amino acid pool, no matter what the amino acid composition of a meal consumed. This false idea is still perpetuated by the meat and dairy industries, in an attempt to influence people to continue consuming their truly health destroying products.

Fishing Trip

Last Saturday on 23rd January 2010 I went on a fishing trip with my husband, dad, sister, my brother and a future brother in law (yes, my sister might be getting married in May this year..Yay!) and it was AWESOME!!!

I mean..we went there last month during the rainy season and most of us end up not catching anything at all.. but this time around it's different, the rainy season has passed and the water is stable in its salinity and we caught loads of fish!!!including me!

Okay..before i arrived there i sort of made a prayer of what i expected which are:

a)  I wanted to catch five or more fish because i've only managed to catch 1 fish in my whole life..yup..sad ain't it?
b)  I wanted to get at least 2 types of fish because the only type of fish i have ever caught in my 25 years of living is ikan gelame..which is quite sad actually..its just unacceptable!
c) I want to make fishing as one of my hobbies..actually it is my hobby referring to the many occasions that i've gone fishing, its just that i haven't acknowledge it yet..okay..i've acknowledged it already..

AND at the end of the day...(drumroll please..)

I did get what i wanted!!and more!
can you believe it?! I actually caught 9 fishes!! (okay.. i know i sound over excited, but its only because i am over excited..!)
okay..here's the list:

1 ikan duri which i sadaqah-ed to our fishing neighbour because my family doesn't eat that fish
3 ikan buntal which was really cute! i think they're adorable! so i let them go because we can't eat them anyway..they're poisonous..
5 gelame!!!Yay!! i broke my own record of 1 gelame..haha..

So..in the end, after 12 hours of fishing..we all had a wonderful wonderful day..i really really enjoyed myself..we had loads of fun..thank u so much pa for the fishing trip!! it really made my weekend..thanks papa...

Reasons i love going fishing:

1) i get to spend quality time with my family
2) its super relaxing
3) i can write or read while waiting for MY fish..hehe..
4) the change of scenery..being at sea..i love the sea..im officially a beach/sea/ocean girl..i just don't like the city..
5) Fishing burns calories - 145 calories..this is just an extra advantage..i didn't really have it in mind..
6) i love the boat rides to the 'kelong' especially the one at 3 in the morning..i simply cannot describe how i felt..i just want to feel..not think..
7) the joy of seeing my line being pulled by the fish..and screaming "i got a fish" to everyone there..seeing my dad and everyone laugh at my joy..its just priceless..
8) cooking the fishes that we caught ourselves
9) i just love every moment of it..

Father, Brother and Me..

Lose Weight Status

Okay...today is the fifth day according to my Couch to 5 k program..I've been following the program religiously and i have been pushing myself up to certain points that i though i couldn't..Anyway..i just want to update on my weigh loss status..my weight right now is 61 the last time i checked..i know it hasn't change that much and frankly speaking im not obsessed about the weight thingie..because..i had been doing all kinds of diet in my 25 years of life and the weight is not a good measure of success..and i want to make a statement here...

NOTHING WORKS IN LOSING WEIGHT AND KEEPING IT THERE OTHER THAN EATING MODERATELY AND HEALTHILY AND MAINTAINING A GOOD LIFESTYLE. NOTHING.

Okay..i have tried all kinds of diets..i've even starved myself for 1 month..thats like 31 days..without eating..yup..and i lost like 10 kg like that..but..i gained it back within months..it nearly killed me to lose all that weight and then it comes back just in a blink of an eye..even those who could starve forever became aneroxic..so my point here is that..for the past few weeks i have been applying this concept of eating moderately and counting my calories.. and exercising ( 20 minutes following the C25K program, 3 days a week) and i am seeing amazing results:

i look a lot better
my skin is clearer
nearly no pimples at all
im energetic
im more prone to positive thinking
my butt is tighter..haha..im just being honest!
my tummy a lot smaller
my arms a bit tomer
I LOOK SO MUCH BETTER!

and stuff like that..and it really motivates me..i mean i eat 3 times a day with snacks in between and im losing weight at the same time! i feel great!i know im healthier!i look in the mirror and i see a better person and i learn and im still learning to channel my excessive desire for food to something better..so..my current menu is:
Breakfast
Almonds
or
1 slice of wholemeal bread

it is very important to note that breakfast is a MUST

Snack 1
Fruits
or
Salad or Almonds

Lunch
Wholemeal bread sandwich
or
Rice with malay cusine

Snack 2
1 slice of Wholemeal bread
or
Fruits
or
Salad

Note: The snacks are to prevent me from feeling hungry. The important lesson that i learn from my body is i am not suppose to let it starve. Its a lot BETTER to eat snacks then to starve. There are scientific reasons behind it but i'll post it some other time.

Dinner
Tom Yam without rice (My favourite!)
or
Light stuff

I still eat what i want but at a moderate level..i don't pig out and i dont stuff my face with food all the time!

And in my opinion, the C25K program is a realy good program and it really really helped me a lot in my quest for a healthier lifestyle.

Another thing..i drink lots of water!! like 1 to 2 litres a day! it is the magic that makes all the healthy eating and exercizing works!

You are what you decide

I have this tendency to think that whatever that is happening to me if it's good then it's a test from Allah and when its not good (im not gonna say its bad) then its also a test but its also a punishment for me.
This way of thinking have been instilled in me by my mum since when i was little and i can categorize it as my 'natural reflex '. This is because, when im having a bad day, like the ones i had these past few days, there's this voice inside my head that says.."you must have done something wrong for you to deserve this"('this refers to punishment) well..when thinking rationally, of course there is something that i did..in action or in reaction that triggered the 'problems', otherwise things like relatioship problems will not occur, because it takes two to tango and because..again..the people that are in my life are all good people with good personality..not everybody is perfect, but generally, the people in my life are good people..and i am thankfull for that..really i am..but like i said..it takes two to tango..and therefore i think i need to take some time to refect upon myself..because these past months have been all about doing..taking actions..which is good..but i need some time to think about me..about what kind of person i wanna be and how do i improve myself..to be a better wife, daughter and so on..as for the 'test' part..i think everyday is a test for me..because this is life right? everybody have their problems..it's the way that they handle it that makes them different..and the test is to see how i handle my problems or 'tests'..this is because..from my point of view..its the decisions that we make in our everyday life that mounts up to what we are..its the way that we haddle things and challenges that makes up who we are..the things that we go through in life will make us better people..if we learn from our mistakes and if we make a better decision the next time and the next time and the next time..therefore we will eventually become better people with time..not perfect but better as the days and years go by..as we get older.. why do i want to be better? its just the natural state of my mind to improve everyday..one day at a time..because evrything change..nothing is constant..therefore i have to choose..good change or bad change..it is up to me..because god have given me the privilege to choose..LIFE..its easier said than done right..?but..like someone once said..

Watch your thoughts,
they become words,
Watch your words,
they become actions,
Watch your actions,
they become habits,
Watch your habits,
they become character,
Watch your character,
they become your destiny.

so i think what i have to do right now is start small..start from thinking about what im going to say, whether is it necessary or whether what im going to say will offend someone..even if they are mean to me..im going to start by making better decisions..because i knowthat all the small small things that i do will add up to be something big and will determine who i am..same as the words "you are what you eat".. im rephrasing it to "you are what you decide" in every moment and every day of your life.

Yesterday

Okay..i wanted to write yesterday, but there was too much going on inside my head, i can't actually get it out.
Here's a summary of what happened yesterday:
1. Worked out relationships problem by putting it all out on the table-which went really well. Yay!
im so...happy now..
What i learned was I NEED TO THINK FIRST BEFORE I SPEAK. Yup..that's my problem..

2. Sold 2 chocolate cake
I know it seems little..it is little..but i'm taking it easy..it's a side income and i don't want to STRESS myself over it because im not good in handling stress..im not..so..Yay!haha..

3. Had a real family dinner for the first time in 3 weeks
I missed family dinner and i had one last nite and its just wonderful sitting around the table and eating and talking and just be a family..

4. Memorized surah from the Quran
Im taking Quran class..yup..to improve myself and i have managed to memorize about 15 surah..i have tasmik' tomorrow..yay for me..im so happy..and i want to further improve myself in this aspect..

5. Had supper with my aunt, cousins and husband (actually i had a drink, the others had supper)

6. Had a long talk with my husband which we haven't got the chance to do since he started working, cause he always comes home late around 10.30pm..so by then he's tired and im tired..so there isn't much motivation to talk.

7. Slept early - emotional day is the most tiring day..

Officially depressed

Bad night..
Bad morning..
Bad
Bad
Bad
im officially depressed
everything is going wrong with my relationship this week
my mom haven't talk to me for 2 weeks
i had a big and deep argument with my husband
my friends are pissed at me
all happening at the same time..
all i want to do rite now is to get into bed and sleep all day
hoping that everything will just go away..
why is relationship so hard??
why?!?!
i know the answer but sometimes i just pretend to be stupid
its easier
relationships are hard because it involves people
people have different personality
different behavior
different action
different reaction
different mind set
different perspective
different way of dealing with this sort of stuff
that's why
and the presence of EGO does not help at all
nope
and i admit i have a lot of ego
but i believe i am not aware of it at times
it is hard for me to talk to somebody after a fight or a disagreement
but sometimes its easy for me too
and when i realize that it is hard for me to talk to someone after a fight or a disagreement
it is because i just do not like the awkwardness in it
it's so awkward and at the same time i'll get a lecture or two from my mum
and i just dislikes that
please please please treat me like an adult
i am an adult
talk to me diplomatically
im not stupid
it's just that there are circumstances in life that maybe forced me to be the way i am
but i know
i know
that i am not a mean person
i am not a heartless person
i am just sick and tired of being treated like a kid
i am sick and tired of being treated like a stupid person
and i am sick and tired of being treated like i have no will of my own
like i have no stand
like i have no right over myself
all im feeling right now is
i want to dissapear and go somewhere nobody knows me and start over
this is how i feel at 11.34 am 19th january 2010.

Introduction

Hello everyone..I'm mariam and im here to express myself! ;) I love make up and im in the process of becoming a make up artrist. I love different varieties of scarfs, the colour, texture and ways to wear it! I currently own a furniture business which sells french colonial antique, teak and mahogany furniture. I'm also in the process of losing weigh. I'm about 165 cm tall and i weigh 61.1 kg the last time i checked. Right now i'm following a program i invented for myself to help me lose weight and at the same time im creating and starting a healthier lifestyle. I was actually inspired by antishay from youtube. She's  so amazing by the way. And i'm slowly transitioning to eating raw food, but i'm still at baby step. :) I'm also a fan of jogging, swimming, white-water rafting and rock-climbing. I'm currently starting an online business, so we'll see how that goes...So...these are the things that i'll be talking about here and maybe more stuff will be added along the way..
